It may not make as much noise as some others, but after over 100 years in the business, that kind of quite victory is earned. The automaker even released its new "Alfa Romeo Classiche" Heritage Program in 2022 for brand enthusiasts that hold the key to some of the oldest vehicles in the brand, an upkeep and maintenance program of sorts. A part of the Stellantis automotive group, and initially Fiat Chrysler, Alfa Romeo will be moving on to greener pastures, figuratively and literally. The automaker will be releasing electrified models and all-electric models like the rest of the automotive group, as detailed in the Dare Forward 2030 announcement. Sliding quietly by at the end of March 2023 was the all-new 2024 Tonale, with production of retail models now in full force.
“The Alfa Romeo Tonale offers more than 30 miles of electric range, best-in-class 285 horsepower and a list of technology features…Entering the competitive premium compact sport-utility segment with such a compelling product and our brand’s first electrified offering shows a clear direction for Alfa Romeo’s future." - Larry Dominique, senior vice president and head of Alfa Romeo North America
Old dogs can learn new tricks, and Alfa Romeo is getting electrified with the rest of Stellantis. The automaker’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), consumers can experience the driving range a larger lithium-ion battery can provide. Plug-in hybrids have grown in popularity, outpacing simple hybrids with the demand for the best of both worlds - gasoline for that highway speed and electric for the city and quiet cruising. Able to recharge the battery at a charging station or at home, plug-in hybrids don’t have to rely on regenerative braking like a hybrid, and are able to offer that 30-mile all-electric range (AER).
Currently being built overseas, the all-new Alfa Romeo 2024 Tonale is put together at the Giambattista Vico Stellantis plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, Italy. One of the automaker’s most advanced production sites, we can already expect units to start hitting dealership lots by June 2023 – two months from the date of this post. Not holding back on a PHEV, the Tonale will be entering the premium compact CUV segment with standard all-wheel drive.
Consumers can expect a U.S. manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $42,995 (plus destination fee). At this time, the lineup consists of three trims – Sprint, Ti ($44,995 plus destination fee), and Veloce ($47,495 plus destination fee). Even at its highest tier, consumers can take advantage of a $7,500 federal EV tax credit, virtually buying a new 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce for $40k. Just keep in mind that the tax break only applies to owners of new models, and only applies to the tax year a new Tonale is purchased in.
