Dodge is no different as they have tapped the Dodge Hornet nameplate to be their next new effort. The Hornet concept was most recently shown all the way back at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. Back then, this Hornet was cast as a memorable concept for a new crossover. The 2006 Hornet was built with a box design that was popular among customers back then. A future production version was never made, until last year when we learned of the spy shots that indeed showed what Dodge had been laboring on.
Brand new spy photographs uncover a refreshed peek of one under development on the streets of Detroit. The new Dodge Hornet we see entering production looks nothing like the initial concept from 2006. But, fascinating to note how some parallels are noted to its Alfa Romeo Tonale Stellantis sibling. Allow us to breakdown what we have learned in recent months about the forthcoming Dodge Hornet crossover SUV product set to debut in less than a year!
A Wild Dodge Hornet Whizzes This Way
Set to be produced AND ride on the same platform, the Dodge Hornet has a fascia with inlets at each corner with a space in the center resembling a trapezoidal figure. There's a thin grille in the center of the vehicle's front and a larger opening above it. The headlights are slim and have struck edges. Complete with its raised roofline and curved window on the rear hatchback that sustains the Hornet crossover from appearling too square. The beneath part of the window on the arear door has an upward grade. The wheels on this vehicle seem to be the same ones that the Tonale sports. The spy spots also show the Hornet carries a neat spoiler on the roof, and a position for outlines the sides of the window. On each side, there are three rectangular taillights.
Different Powertrain Options?
The motor alternatives for the Hornet are not confirmed, however, the exact ones as what the Tonale has might also be inside the Hornet. In the United States, this is the dependable 1.3-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor powers the rear axle for a complete system output for a solid 272 horsepower rating. A 15.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack supplies more than 30 miles of a driving range. Should the Hornet also have the Tonale's full motor lineup, then the Hornet will arrive with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain that helps reach 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, the Alfa has two 1.5-liter mild-hybrid powertrains and a diesel alternative.
Another connection between the Hornet and the Tonale will be their production location. Both will come from the Pomigliano d’Arco Assembly Plant in Italy. Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis has allowed the small crossover to reach production and arrive at before the end of 2022.
