Jeep and Electrify America to Install Jeep 4xe Charging Stations

Written By, Jordan R

Jeep has made good on its word to start releasing electrified versions of every vehicle in its lineup. The Jeep Compass 4xe and Renegade 4xe First-Edition Models were first released overseas over a year ago in January 2020 before the Coronavirus pandemic went global. In the months that followed, automakers closed and reopened the doors of manufacturing plants, went back to work, and Jeep engineers released the next vehicle that would change the way people look at the off-road vehicle - the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. As Jeep continues to release electrified variations of its lineup, the automaker wants to make it easier for Jeepers to enjoy the benefits of zero carbon emissions and more torque at 0 RPMs. That brings us to the Jeep 4xe Charging Network.

“Electrification opens a new chapter in the Jeep brand story, and it brings an entirely new level of excitement and enjoyment to our enthusiastic owners…Key to making Jeep brand the greenest SUV brand is assuring our owners can enjoy the benefits of electric propulsion wherever they go, including the most iconic off-road trails in the country.” - Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer

Through a partnership with Electrify America, Jeep has plans to install Jeep 4xe charging stations this year at three of the most popular off-road sites and iconic trails for the Jeep brand — Moab, Utah; the Rubicon Trail in Pollock Pines, California; and Big Bear, California. These three trails are listed on the Jeep Badge of Honor mobile app, where Jeepers can login, take the trail challenge, and then earn a real badge decal to put on their Jeep. At these three locations, specifically, charging stations for 4xe models will be set up so Jeepers who conquer the trail can do so with zero carbon emissions as many times as they wish by recharging the battery.

Doubling up on going green, these same Jeep 4xe Charging Stations will collect solar power to generate electricity. If that option is not available, then they will be directly connected to the power grid like most other charging stations. As the year goes on, more charging stations will be installed at other locations beyond California and Utah. The Jeep Badge of Honor Program recently increased the list of Jeep 4x4 certified trails from 49 to 56 in 2020. Imogene Pass in Colorado, and the Northwest OHV Park in Texas plus those mentioned above, and that’s a lot of trekking to do.

Aside from making it easier for Jeep 4xe owners to enjoy the electrified benefits of their plug-in hybrid by installing charging stations at popular sites, Stellantis is taking a sharp turn into alternative fuel vehicles. Slowly but surely, we’re going to see a wave of plug-in hybrids if not electric vehicles from the automotive group in the coming years. However, the U.S. population is still ruled by internal gasoline combustion engines. Mainly because that has been the norm for most of us all of our lives and people don’t like change. Looking for a charging station that takes 20 minutes versus a gas station around the corner that takes maybe two minutes sounds like a big change.

If charging stations were more widespread and charging up became easier, then maybe plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles would become more popular. That’s the other side of the Jeep 4xe Charging Stations project. Sort of paving the way for the rest of the 4xe lineup, if Jeep can get more charging stations around the nation, more consumers will surely be interested in driving a 4xe vehicle. Plus, with apps like PlugShare, finding charging stations has never been easier.
