The first quarter of 2022 finished a few weeks ago, but the results are now available. Who was the victor between all plug-in hybrid vehicle sales? The Jeep Wrangler! The only vehicle to sell over 8,000 vehicles with a total of 8,346 vehicles sold, delivering customers the opportunity to drive with savings at the gas pump for as long as they own their new Wrangler 4xe. The Wrangler 4xe made up precisely 18% of all Wrangler sales, as the conventional gasoline option of the Wrangler still attracts tons of attention. The Wrangler saw upwards of 45,000 new Jeep Wrangler sold in the United States in just the first quarter of 2022.

Moving Onwards From the Engines of Old

There are rival brands that have built vehicles to try and take on the success of the Jeep Wrangler. However, there wasn't a lot in the way of first place for the 4xe trim offered in the Wrangler mid-size SUV, as well as its Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV cousin. The rival Toyota RAV4 Prime only saw 5,233 vehicles move in the same span, over 3,100 less in total. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, also oversees the Chrysler brand and its Chrysler Pacifica nearly outsold the Toyota product as well with 4,164 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2022. The plug-in hybrid market will expand as more brands add new choices for drivers. Other brands saw stable sales, but zero quite like what the Wrangler did so far in 2022. The only vehicle that might top the sales of the 4xe trim Wrangler would be its concept turning into a production vehicle; the Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 which has spawned as many as seven concept vehicles. Last month, we spoke about the Jeep brand extending its 4xe trim. We can only hope at least one of those concepts are built into one special Jeep Wrangler Magneto EV.

Tracking Global Sales of PHEVs

International sales for plug-in hybrid vehicles are growing at a massive clip with sales duplicated from 2020 to 2021; might we see a consistent jump when we look ahead at the results of 2021 to 2022? Count on that. California as a state just saw their one-millionth plug-in vehicle sale (including all EVs and plug-in hybrid automobiles). The reality is Jeep is far better at modifying its brand to acclimate to customers than other brands. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said Jeep is accountable for provi\ding its business with the power to fulfill regulatory credits for plug-in hybrids.
