start credit applicationIt’s finally happening! After all the news about the Kia EV9 all-electric SUV, we were starting to wonder if the South Korean automaker was planning to keep this one overseas. We got the Kia EV6 a little while back after Kia America shared the news about the first all-electric vehicle in the lineup with no gasoline precedent. The automaker usually makes a popular vehicle a hybrid, then a plug-in hybrid, but rarely a battery-electric vehicle (BEV). The EV6 was something special, and after much waiting, Kia America brought the Kia EV9 to the 2023 Monterey Car Week.
Showing up at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, this is as good as an announcement as any that the Kia EV9 will be arriving on North American shores. Rumor has it, we’ll even have some on hand at NowCar.com. Yes, even though Monterey Car Week is still fresh, having just finished on August 20, 2023, the automaker is quick to fill dealership lots with its newest flagship vehicle, the EV9. Crazy, right? We all thought that the Kia EV6 would reign supreme for a while, but being a predominantly SUV automaker, it makes sense that its first all-electric SUV would take up the helm.
“After shocking the automotive world last year at The Quail with the debut of the EV6 GT, Kia is returning with the EV9 SUV, which encapsulates our experience in producing brilliantly designed, best-in-class SUVs with our deep expertise in developing the industry’s leading EVs…Being present in Monterey demonstrates the gravity of Kia’s dedication to delivering vehicles that continue to innovate.” – Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America
During Monterey Car Week and The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, the three-row EV9 SUV will share the stage with a new limited edition model of the EV6. Called a “designer” model, the limited edition will only have 1000 units produced. There isn’t a whole lot of information just yet, just tidbits of a unique interior and colorful design. With a dedicated Kia space on the main exhibition field, not only was the new limited edition EV6 announced, but fans finally got a chance to experience the EV9. After he UK had a chance to experience the EV9 during a special EV9 UK Dealer Tour called the “EV9 Electric Experience”, we were starting to wonder when it would be our turn to enjoy the magic.
It all comes back to the Kia Corp Plan S Strategy. Back when the Kia Corporation was still known as “Kia Motors”, the automaker shared a two-path plan for the next few years, ending in 2025. By this time, the automaker has an objective of adding 11 electric vehicles (EVs) to the lineup. Well, it’s less than two years away, and we only have one BEV, two if we count the EV9 making its way stateside. There was an EV5 announced in China during an auto show, but not a lot of information surrounding it just yet. By 2025, Kia want to have obtained a 6.6-peercent global market share of all BEV sales. As mighty as the automaker has become, it needs to step it up if it wants to become a supreme supplier of BEVs and stop electrifying SUVs and producing gasoline models like the recent K3 debut in Mexico City.
