First introduced during the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, the HMG Smart City concept appeared again during the World Smart City Expo (WSCE) 2024. A design that blends nature and man-made infrastructure, the Kia Corp was happy to jump on board with its “Opposites United” design philosophy present in upcoming battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), most notably the recent Kia EV3 and EV4 concepts. Embracing the “Smart City” concept, Kia even collaborated with renowned Barcelona-based digital artist SixnFive to create a world inspired by what a lifestyle with the Kia EV3 would look in a Smart City.
Just check out that picture. A Smart City could change the way we think about living spaces, workspaces, and cityscapes by going for a bold, nature-inspired design that doesn’t simply cut down trees but builds around them. We’re not saying there’s actually a tree out there that looks just like the above, but it’s a neat way of embracing concrete and nature to make something functional while still getting some free oxygen on the side.
“It was a truly inspiring experience to take the features of the EV3 and translate them into this unique world of architecture and structures…It’s such a visually impressive car, with a serious presence. The prominent diagonal lines harmonically exist with the geometrical design, with these lines also rounded and soft. And like the car, the visuals we made are designed to have a lasting impression.” - Ezequiel Pini, known as SixnFive.
The Kia Corp design philosophy of “Opposites United” is all about combining mechanical engineering with nature. Using natural shapes to form its upcoming automobiles, Kia is making large strides to make future vehicles sustainable whilst changing the way they look. When they were first revealed, Kia shared details about how the EV3 and EV4 interiors were made with sustainable materials. The automaker also fully embraced its “Opposites United” design philosophy by choosing one of the main five elements – Air, Fire, Earth, Water, and Spirit – as the basis for each model.
The element Air was chosen for the look and feel of the EV3, and this led to creating a more atmospheric feel for the interior cabin with a focus on light and transparency. A great example of the sustainable materials used is mycelium. A resource that comes from mushroom roots, this was used to produce the EV3 interior console table. As for the EV4, its upholstery is made of 100-percent recycled cotton and uses natural dyes made of madder roots and walnut shells for the color. Based on this, the EV4 took inspiration from the element of Earth, of course.
As for SixnFive, he is a leading 3D artist known for creating imaginary, dreamlike worlds. With his art hosted in exhibitions in Art Basel, Moco Museum, Fotografiska Stockholm, and Museo della Permanente, he was a great choice for this collaboration. These images almost look real, and the placement of the Kia EV3 is the perfect choice. Learn more about new and upcoming Kia BEVs when you follow us on NowCar social media.
