We strongly believe EV6 is a compelling and relevant model for the new EV market…With EV6 we aimed to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated, high-tech features on pure and rich volumes, while providing a unique space as a futuristic EV.” - Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Design Center
It's about time, right? Kia Motors announced it was going to become the next all-electric automaker, but Kia has also placed a focus on sports cars, its new generation Kia Sorento, and recently a little bit of luxury. We saw the Futuron Concept at the 2019 Geneva International Auto Show, and that was it for a time. In early 2020, Kia Motors announced its Plan S strategy for dominating the electric vehicle market, with 6.6-percent of the global EV market share and making 25-percent of all sales from eco-friendly vehicles. Then in late 2020, the Hyundai Motor Group (along with Kia Motors), developed a new electric vehicle platform that would set the stage for all of its future vehicles.
Called the Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP, this new platform made its debut in late 2020, so it was only a matter of time before fantasy became reality. Enter the new Kia EV6. A combination of the best of both worlds, Kia Motors embraces a new design philosophy when creating its first all-electric automotive without a precursor. That means, unlike the Kia Optima Hybrid, or the Kia Niro EV, an internal gasoline combustion engine-powered vehicle didn’t come first. The EV6 is its own model with its own lineup.
The new philosophy surrounds five pillars of success: Bold for Nature, Joy for Reason, Power to Progress, Technology for Life, and Tension for Serenity. Each one can be seen in the design for the new EV6, and a lot of it has to do with new tech inside and out. Starting with the front fascia, it’s certainly bold sporting an all-new grille. As opposed to the original ‘Tiger Nose Grille’ Kia Motors is known for, the EV6 comes with a new ‘Digital Tiger Face’ design. The interior is spacious and welcoming, and with a new design to inspire joy and tranquility.
A new dedicated EV is certainly progressive, and with the new E-GMP for future vehicles, Kia Motors has a brighter future ahead. There is all sorts of new technology, more on that in a moment, and with some of these new tech features, a sense of space and serenity comes to mind. The new front fascia and the E-GMP aren’t the only cool parts of tech added to the new Kia EV6.
Inside, the center console and dashboard are less cluttered with fewer buttons and a new seamless high-tech curved high-definition audio visual and navigation (AVN) screen. It’s a new form of infotainment for controlling the sound system, navigation, and more. Underneath the AVN screen are controls for the HVAC system (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), and an interesting “haptic button” that creates a whole new sense of space in the interior. The dashboard slopes away towards the front of the car and the front row is a lot more open. Here’s hoping that means Level 4 or 5 autonomy in future vehicles.
