start credit applicationThe Kia Corporation has been pretty busy over the last few years, changing the meaning of the name and reshaping what consumers think when they hear it. A sports car automaker, an all-electric automaker, an award-winning automaker? All true if we look at the Kia K5, Kia K3. Kia EV6, and Kia EV9. The latter two have won more awards than we can count, but a new model is already turning heads, and it hasn’t even had a global reveal yet. Turning up in China twice thus far, the Kia EV5 shows up at the Chengdu Motor Show in China before its official release (first in China, then in global markets).
“The Kia EV5 was created to redefine the compact SUV genre with a form shaped by Kia’s unique design philosophy ‘Opposites United’…At every stage, Kia’s designers have worked closely with their engineering colleagues to create a holistic solution for sustainable mobility. As a result, the EV5 sets a new standard for design, performance and practicality while providing new levels of driver enjoyment and user experience.” - Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center
Not much has been said about the new EV5 just yet, but we have gotten some good looks at it inside and out. The style for the EV5 is based on the Kia “Opposites United” design philosophy. It’s all about combining natural style like landscapes and contemporary architecture designed by man. Made up of five pillars – Bold for Nature, Joy for Reason, Power to Progress, Technology for Life, and Tension for Serenity – the Kia EV5 has a lot of inspiration from the “Bold for Nature” pillar with powerful lines and a solid silhouette while keeping a soft look. It’s also pretty boxy-looking, based off of the Kia Telluride SUV.
The exterior is highlighted with powerful fenders and wide shoulder lines that make the front fascia look even meaner with its wide nose and new digital “Tiger Face” replacing the “tiger nose” of Kia models. Like other battery-electric vehicle (BEV) models by Kia, the EV5 comes with three-dimensional ‘Signature Star Map Lighting’ formed by daytime running lights (DRL). In the rear, an extended and lowered spoiler adds to the style and helps with aerodynamic efficiency for upgraded performance. Available in nine colors, plus one matte color, consumers have some choices to personalize starting with the exterior: Snow White Pearl; Clear White; Starry Night Black; Magma Red; Ivory Silver; Frost Blue; Iceberg Green; Tide Blue; Shale Grey; and Ivory Silver (matte).
Kia models have become more spacious overtime, and the interior of the EV5 is just as cozy. Turning the interior cabin into more of a lounge, it all starts with the mood lighting popping up in Kia cars. Able to adjustable brightness (0-10) and choose from ten shades of light for a total of 64 color options, this mood lighting also has some safety aspects to it. When activated, the mood lighting synchronizes seamlessly with the vehicle’s drive modes, dims in low light conditions, and alerts the driver if the vehicle goes over the speed limit.
A new generation of connected car Navigation has been added to the EV5, along with new Cockpit (ccNC) and heater controls to make their cabin feel more like home. With upholstery consisting of two woven options and one artificial leather option for the base model, we’re already seeing some levels of comfort. There isn’t a lot on technology or other functionality just yet. For the interior, there are four color choices and five seat pattern options offered.
