Mazda is ready to provide their buyers with three more options in this beloved segment. The new CX-50 will be sold alongside the CX-5 and eventually replace the CX-5. The current CX-9 is nearing an end of the line as well, so Mazda has two new vehicles to go in their place. The CX-70 and CX-90 will both carry an inline six-cylinder powertrain and the latest in modern interiors with a slew of trims to choose from. Though Mazda has a solid lineup of crossovers in the CX-30, CX-5 and CX-9, there's always space for additional options, especially in the current U.S. landscape. The Japanese automaker has just revealed these three new SUVs and adds the CX-50, CX-70 and CX-90 will all be here by 2023 and most likely be a 2024 model year upon their debut. What else have we learned about where Mazda is headed?
More on the Mazda CX-50 SUV
Owners looking for a compact SUV can opt for the first new Mazda SUV coming out, the CX-50 will be the first addition to the lineup, and it should arrive early on in 2023, perhaps making it in time to be a 2023 model year vehicle option. The current CX-5 will possibly be sold alongside it as a legacy vehicle for Mazda buyers who don't require the newest and freshest platform. The new CX-50 will be built on the platform that's shared between the current CX-30 and Mazda 3, and it's going to be built and manufactured here in America.
Once the Mazda CX-50 launches, the lineup will then witness the addition of the midsize Mazda CX-90 and then the Mazda CX-70. These vehicles will be built on a new rear-wheel-drive-based platform that will utilize both a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a new inline-six cylinder engine. Mazda revealed the notable difference between these new SUVs will be found mostly in sizing and capacity as the Mazda CX-90 will be a three-row vehicle while the Mazda CX-70 comes with two rows. These moves have us believing Mazda could act using a similar strategy to the moves being made by rival Jeep and their Jeep Grand Cherokee and the addition of the all-new Grand Cherokee L. Essentially, the two cars will be identical in terms of interior and exterior design but will have different wheelbase lengths and configurations for buyers with varying needs.
Currently, the CX-9 will be phased out with the introduction of the new CX-70 and CX-90, but it's a move that makes sense for Mazda. The CX-9's current opportunity is its lack of room beyond the first row, and having further options for an influence of greater potential for new Mazda customers.
