Calling it a hypercar, the vehicle was going to be originally a one-off, or just one model. Well, no automaker can pass on the chance to make the most out of an anniversary edition vehicle by offering more than one iteration of it. Everyone likes to have choices, and so Mercedes-Benz has decided to release the Mercedes-AMG in four "Edition 55" special models based on the 2023 AMG GLE SUV and AMG GLE Coupe.
The major differences between the four models is that two are an SUV and the other two are a coupe. Secondly, each model is numbered as 53 or 63, with the 53 models powered by an AMG-enhanced 3.0L Inline-6 Turbo engine optimized with a 48-Volt Mild Hybrid System and Electric Auxiliary Compressor. The 63 version is powered by a handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 Biturbo engine optimized with a 48-Volt Mild Hybrid System. We don’t usually see an SUV and a coupe powered by the same powertrain, but there it is. The 53 engine will be able to generate 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. The 63 engine is able to generate 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission and equipped with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all- wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution.
That takes care of the major differences. Aside from the powertrain, every special "Edition 55" model has the choice of Obsidian Black Metallic or MANUFAKTUR Diamond White Metallic paint, with special contrasting foil, and 22-inch AMG forged wheels. Consumers can find unique touches to the exterior and interior cabin to make these special editions stand out.
For the exterior, both sides of the vehicle feature that special contrasting foil with the AMG crest on each side. The 22-inch forged AMG cross-spoke wheels are finished in matte grey with "Edition 55" lettering and laurel wreath adorning the wheel center caps. Exterior elements are finished in high-gloss black, and depending on the paint job selected, this can further the contrast of colors that pop or a fluid transition. The high-gloss black look spreads to the front splitter and trim strip at the front of the vehicle, exterior mirror housings, window surrounds, and trim strip of the AMG rear fascia. Additional tweaks include heat-insulating dark-tinted glass past the B-pillar, two black chrome twin tailpipe trims, and AMG lettering on a unique fuel filler cap in silver chrome.
Inside, the cabin has a contrast of black and red, stainless steel door sill trims with red illuminated AMG lettering, black AMG floor mats with red contrasting stitching and "Edition 55" lettering woven in red. The driver is greeted by an AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in microfiber and sporting "AMG" and "Edition 55" badges. The upholstery is two-tone Classic Red/Black Nappa leather, with the color combination extending to the door panels and center console, with the latter also featuring an embossed AMG crest. Luxurious and a little sporty, the interior is rounded out with AMG trim elements in matte carbon black. Every model also comes with a tailor-made AMG Indoor Car Cover constructed out of breathable outer paneling and tear-resistant synthetic fiber fabric with a lining of antistatic inner fabric made of flannel. Fancy stuff.
