start credit applicationMitsubishi Motors has been doing well since it joined the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Even more in recent years with the release of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV next-generation models. With the automaker joining the rest of the industry in the electric vehicle (EV) movement, Mitsubishi will always play favorites with its SUVs, especially in the American market. It’s unclear when the Japanese automaker will release a new EV, but a new compact SUV concept has made its global debut at the Vietnam Motor Show 2022, and this could be the new core SUV that Mitsubishi adds to the lineup – the Mitsubishi XFC Concept.
“We will launch the new compact SUV sequentially in the ASEAN markets including Vietnam in fiscal year 2023…In the future, we plan to add an electrified variant to the lineup and to also roll it out in regions outside ASEAN. We hope to grow the model from a vehicle for the ASEAN market to a global strategic vehicle, making it a core model like the sales-leading Xpander crossover MPV.” - Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors
This new compact SUV has a little bit of everything. The new core model for the lineup, the Mitsubishi XFC Concept comes with style, performance, improved handling, ample cargo space, high-level comfort for passengers, class-leading interior space, and ground clearance for going off-road. Every new Mitsubishi model comes with its version of all-wheel drive, known as All-Wheel Control (AWC) and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), and the handling has improved with four driving modes on the Mitsubishi XFC Concept. With Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud modes, many consumers may be used to many of these, but “Wet” is a new one, helpful for sudden rain showers and other weather conditions. So, this new concept is definitely able to go off-road – check.
We don’t know about the powertrain, but this kind of handling also adds points to the performance section – check. Generous legroom in the rear seats with high-quality ride comfort – also check. Style comes in spades with a muscular overtone with sharp lines, a new Dynamic Shield, larger wheels, and fender flares in the front and rear. Expressing a tough attitude while being agile, this might be that “high-performance” electric SUV Mitsubishi Motors was talking about a few years ago. Just about every automaker that has a plan for an EV also claims that it can fuse high-performance cars and EVs into its most successful model of the new era.
Well, we know Mitsubishi is starting to bring the heat thanks to its involvement with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. If there’s a time to shine, the time is now. We were hoping to hear more about that Google Operating System that would be running the ins and outs of upcoming Mitsubishi models, but the Google Alliance will have to wait. We’ll have to settle for the new Mitsubishi XFC concept at the moment. Still something to look forward to, even if the current plans are for the South East Asian auto market (ASEAN) and Vietnam, a global reveal can’t be just limited to those regions.
