Could this be a sign of a future fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles on the market? Several years back, a partnership with General Motors and the United States Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center began. The birth of the General Motors military defense unit, named GM Defense, began work on a new hydrogen-powered Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 pickup.
While this new Silverado is not the first vehicle that has undergone testing, the military wants to see what hydrogen-powered vehicles can offer. If the fuel cell technology, which is silent and offers “exportable” fuel production, is worth producing on a larger scale, this might be a success for both sides of the partnership. Let’s take a closer look at the latest Chevrolet Silverado in the works.
What Else Makes the Chevrolet Silverado Special?
Not every Chevrolet Silverado ZH2 has a driving range of more than 400 miles or has such an intricate and wonderfully dynamic suspension system. This is not the first time Chevrolet has produced a hydrogen-powered vehicle - most notably, the Chevrolet Colorado that also carried the ZH2 nameplate. The current project revolves around the Silverado, which also has the added bonus of low-end torque strength and power that can help these Silverado pickups go over hills easier.
These vehicles are meant to be powerful and able to handle the rigors of military use. Not only is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado ZH2 powerful, but there’s also absolutely zero-emissions that come from the hydrogen fuel cell technology. Huge tires, bullbars, spotlights, and winches making any other pickup look small by comparison with the 6.5 foot tall, 7-foot wide pickup that carries a camouflage paint job on a raised ride that weighs over three tons!
Hydrogen Perks Keep Coming
Many of the best features for this unique pickup can be traced back to the Chevrolet Hydro-Tec system that converts all collective hydrogen into electricity. The Silverado also supplies multimatic DSSV shocks, LED lights and rugged body panels. There are more perks thanks to the new technology added to the Silverado.
“The advantage of hydrogen is that you can get it from almost any other form of energy, renewable, grid, or conventional liquid fuels. You could put a reformer up near forward stations, and strip the hydrogen off the JP-8.” - Charlie Freese, GM’s Global Fuel Cell Business program leader and Chairman to the Hydrogen Technical Advisory Committee to the Department of Energy & United States Congress.
