In October, FCA debuted their newest creation, a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine able to outperform the Pentastar V6 with either a 3.2-liter or 3.6-liter configuration. This new engine design shortly followed the initial new Global Medium Engine FCA announced early 2018 in January. The new 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine popped up as a powertrain option for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL with, also new, a mild-hybrid system known as eTorque. That mild-hybrid system changes the game for the Pentastar V6 engine, giving it quite the boost of torque, and won the V6 a place on WardsAuto “10 Best Engines List”.
The Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque popped up in both, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and the 2019 Ram 1500, but was mostly popular with the light-duty pickup truck due to the instant torque delivered. Rated at 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque standard when powered by the V6, the 2019 Ram 1500 gets an increase in torque by 90 lb-ft. If one were to opt-in for the next powertrain on the list, a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine and chooses the option with eTorque, then they’re looking at 530 lb-ft of torque - on a half-ton pickup truck, no less!
“The Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque shows how electrifying components of conventional engines can create magic under the hood…The all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system provides a dollop of electrical propulsion during launch and while shifting gears, creating seamless, buttery smooth power to the wheels and improved fuel economy…Our judges recorded 21 to 22 mpg, outstanding for a full-size, four-wheel-drive pickup…The power of the eTorque system also makes the Ram’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around.” - Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto.
Such praise. This mild-hybrid system replaces the traditional alternator in the truck, able to keep the 12-volt car battery charged as well as perform hybrid functions - auto stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking. Able to deliver 90 lb-ft of torque within 400 milliseconds, drivers won’t even notice the difference between the engine firing up during a cold start and the eTorque humming to life.
“The versatility of our workhorse Pentastar V-6 engine family is unquestioned, with more than 9 million produced; and this latest Wards milestone represents the sixth time the 3.6-liter engine has been recognized with three different iterations…With the new eTorque mild-hybrid system, receiving the Wards 10 Best recognition validates our mission to provide customers optimal ownership value without sacrificing performance.” - Bob Lee, Head of Engine Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering, FCA-North America.
The mild-hybrid eTorque system isn’t the only thing that makes the 2019 Ram 1500 light-duty pickup truck one to boast about. In a single calendar year, the 2019 Ram 1500 appeared on the WardsAuto 10 Best Interiors list and 10 Best User Experience list for 2018. Must be that sweet 12-inch touchscreen with next-generation Uconnect 4 and next-gen SiriusXM 360L platform.
